Harwell Science and Innovation Campus
Harwell Science & Innovation Campus – HV & LV Infrastructure Expansion
Vantage was appointed to deliver the full installation and energisation of both LV and HV electrical infrastructure as part of the expansion works at the prestigious Harwell Science and Innovation Campus.
As a fully accredited ICP for both design and construction up to 132kV, the project
demonstrated our ability to manage and deliver complex multi-stakeholder infrastructure schemes within live and fast-moving environments.
Managing Complexity Through Collaboration
The project involved numerous stakeholders, principal contractors, delivery partners, and
network representatives operating simultaneously across the campus. Maintaining programme alignment and achieving key delivery milestones required proactive coordination, clear communication, and adaptable project management throughout every phase of the works.
Our team facilitated regular on-site coordination meetings, remote progress reviews, and technical workshops to ensure all interfaces between contractors and infrastructure packages were effectively managed. Through this collaborative approach, Vantage successfully maintained programme momentum and, in several areas, accelerated delivery timelines for the end client.
Scope of Works
Vantage delivered a comprehensive turnkey package which included:
- Installation of x4 11kV transformers
- Installation of x6 11kV Ring Main Units (RMUs)
- Installation of x3 LV distribution boards
- Installation of x7 bespoke heavy-duty cut-outs
- Over 13km of LV and HV cable installation
- Full LV and HV jointing works, including DNO route joints
- Glanding and termination of over 360 LV and HV terminations
- Full testing, commissioning, and site energisation
- CT CoP3 metering installations
- Battery charger and tripping unit installations
- Emergency push button installations on DNO substations
- Small power and lighting installations across all six substations
- Full earthing installations at all substations and RMU locations
- GRP substation flooring installation
- Preliminary design works for HV substation steelwork infrastructure
- 18th Edition associated electrical works
- Generator disconnections and transition onto newly installed infrastructure networks
In addition to the electrical scope, Vantage also managed all associated project delivery
activities, including stakeholder management, DNO coordination, witness testing, DNO auditing, and final approval processes ahead of energisation.
Adaptable Delivery in a Live Environment
Due to the operational nature of the campus and the involvement of multiple contractors, the project required significant flexibility in delivery planning and execution. Our teams
successfully managed:
- Out-of-hours working and phased shutdowns
- Private road closures and access coordination
- Traffic management planning and implementation
- CAD-based logistical and delivery planning
- Live infrastructure interfaces and programme-critical switching activities
The project also required the careful transition from temporary generator-fed supplies onto the newly installed permanent infrastructure, ensuring continuity of power and minimal disruption to ongoing campus operations.
End-to-End Infrastructure Expertise
This project highlights Vantage’s capability to deliver large-scale, technically demanding
infrastructure schemes through a combination of engineering expertise, operational flexibility, and strong stakeholder management. From civil coordination and preliminary design support through to HV commissioning and energisation, our integrated delivery model enabled seamless execution across all stages of the project.
By combining full ICP accreditations, self-connect capability, and extensive HV/LV installation
expertise, Vantage continues to support major infrastructure developments with safe,
efficient, and future-ready electrical solutions.
